A profession?

This fall I will teach my very first class: Interpretation of Literature. It is a sophomore level course that is designed for the express purpose of "cultivating a lifelong appreciation of reading." So this week I have been hashing out my syllabus, choosing what far-too-expensive text books I will require the students to buy, and sweating over a course description which probably no one will ever remember. What the beginning of this experience has shown me, more than anything, is that this is exactly what I am made for. I finally feel justified in my decade-long desire to become a college professor. I am looking forward to being a student and a teacher for the next four (or so) years because my perspectives will overlap. I think the effect will be similar to the effect that being a server has on your public dining experiences. I am officially such a geek.
